POLARIS is the name of the St Albans science fiction society. The word POLARIS is theoretically an acronym, but only because someone decided that it ought to be and contrived an unlikely combination of words to make it work. No-one can remember what it stands for anyway. (Of course, if anyone can come up with a better acronym, you are most welcome).
If you want to find out more about POLARIS, they have a website at www.polaris.org, which unfortunately was last updated shortly after the most recent ice age. Despite this, they are actually a very active group, and meet regularly for beer and chat. At these meetings, the C-word is theoretically banned (that's comp*ter) but attendees are often unable to restrain themselves from breaking this rule due to the immense amount of willpower involved. Another rule is that science fiction should be mentioned at least once in each meeting - though often this doesn't happen due to the inebriation factor.
Members of POLARIS who were unfortunate enough to get their pictures taken at our wedding are shown here. (Actually, there are probably a few more pictures to come, but we don't have them all yet).
